Scholarships for Graduate School Students

The following is a list of scholarship programs for graduate students of Sophia University (master’s and doctoral programs; and law school). There are also scholarships awarded on the basis of recommendation from the graduate school. For details, please refer to the “Scholarships for Graduate Students” page on our Web Piloti website.

Scholarship to Apply for Before Enrollment at Graduate School

A scholarship is available to students who have excelled in academics as an undergraduate student and consider Sophia University’s Graduate School as their first choice, but find it difficult to pursue graduate studies because of financial reasons. Recipients of this scholarship are exempted from paying either the full tuition fee or half or one-third thereof (for the first year of enrollment only).

Scholarship for New Students of Sophia University Graduate School

This scholarship is available to students who have excelled in academics as an undergraduate student and consider Sophia University’s Graduate School as their first choice, but find it difficult to pursue graduate studies because of financial reasons. Recipients of this scholarship are exempted from paying either the full tuition fee or half or one-third thereof (for the first year of enrollment only). The tuition fee exemption will be determined on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of the student’s academic performance, financial status, and other factors.

Japan Student Services Organization Loan-Type Scholarship (reservation required)

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides loan-type scholarships to outstanding students who find it difficult to continue studies because of financial reasons. Recipients are required to repay the loan after graduation.

Sophia University Graduate School Scholarship for Fostering Researchers in Doctoral Program (no application required)

Sophia University established the “Sophia University Graduate School Scholarship for Fostering Researchers in the Doctoral Program” in April 2022 to foster outstanding researchers with exceptional research skills who will lead the university’s research and international development. This scholarship is designed to encourage research activities by providing a scholarship to all qualified full-time students enrolled in the doctoral program of the Sophia University Graduate School. Recipients will be determined on the basis of recommendation from the graduate school and the division/area of study to which students belong.

Scholarship Amount:
  1. 300,000 yen per year for students of Sophia University Graduate Schools other than the Graduate School of Science and Technology
  2. 400,000 yen per year for students of Sophia University Graduate School of Science and Technology

Scholarships to Apply for while Enrolled in a Graduate School

Detailed information and specific application procedures will be posted on the Loyola bulletin board for current students (ID and password required).

Sophia University Tuition Support Scholarship (grant type)

This scholarship is available to students who are eager to pursue further studies but have difficulty continuing their studies because of financial reasons. Recipients are entitled to either full tuition fee exemption or half or one-third thereof. A decision will be made on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of academic performance, household income (financial status), and other factors. Applications will be accepted for the spring and autumn semesters, respectively.

Sophia University Graduate School Dual Degree Program (grant type)

This scholarship is available to students who are eager to pursue further studies but have difficulty continuing their studies because of financial reasons. Recipients are entitled to either full tuition fee exemption or half or one-third thereof. A decision will be made on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of academic performance, household income (financial status), and other factors. Applications will be accepted for the spring and autumn semesters, respectively.

Sophia University Graduate School Dual Degree Program Scholarship

For outstanding students participating in a dual degree program offered by an overseas graduate school affiliated with Sophia University, this scholarship provides partial financial support for tuition fees at Sophia University during the period of study abroad.

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Loan Scholarship

This loan-type scholarship, provided by JASSO, is available to students who excel in academics but find it difficult to continue studies because of financial reasons. Recipients are required to repay the loan after graduation.

External Scholarships (from local governments and private organizations)

These scholarships are offered by local governments and private organizations. Both grant-type and loan-type scholarships are available.
