Book Prize Awarded for Collaborative Project by Sophia Professors and Graduates by International Food Studies Association

The book The Global Japanese Restaurant: Mobilities, Imaginaries and Politics, edited by Sophia University Professor James Farrer and Professor Emeritus David Wank has been awarded the 2024 ASFS Book Prize (Edited Volume category) by the Association for the Study of Food & Society (ASFS), the largest international association for food studies.

This competitive prize is awarded every year in June to a single outstanding book. Awardees “employ exemplary research methods, offer novel theoretical insights, and constitute a significant contribution to the study of food from a scholarly perspective.”

This project was funded by a Sophia University Special Grant for Research in Priority Areas, and the contributors to the book are all professors or recent PhD recipients from the Sophia Graduate Program in Global Studies.

Along with Profs Wank and Farrer, the other contributors are Christian Hess (Sophia University), Chuanfei Wang (Hosei University), Mônica R. de Carvalho (SKEMA Business School, Brazil), Lenka Vyletalova (Palacký University Olomouc, Czechia).

The research was supported by the Sophia Institute of Comparative Culture.
