Sophia University has decided to offer all classes during the Spring Semester online. This means that we will be asking students to prepare yourself for online classes, including setting up the required devices at home. However, a recent survey results revealed that it is not possible for some students to prepare for these devices in time for the beginning of classes. Sophia University would like to ensure learning opportunities for all of our students by offering support as much as we can.

Therefore, the university will provide portable Wifi hotspot (40GB/month ) service for students who are facing financial difficulties in preparing the required environment for Internet connection (wired/wireless LAN, Wifi, data communication, tethering on your smartphone, etc.).

However, please understand that the market is currently low on supply and the number of devices available are limited and that we may not be able to accommodate all requests.

We would like to limit rentals to students who are in real need of the service; and therefore ask students to refrain from applying for rental just in case, if you:

• are able to tether your mobile phone to your computer;
  
• were planning on purchasing a new computer; or
  
• just want a computer that operates faster than the one in your possession, etc.
  

Given these difficult times, we ask you let your actions adhere to the educational spirit of “Men and Women for Others, with Others” so that the necessary devices can be delivered to those who need it.

In order to respond to the current emergency circumstances, we have negotiated with some companies for a limited “three-month rental” plan. As it is not certain that how the situation will develop beyond the three-month period, we strongly encourage students to take this opportunity to have their own Internet connection.

• Deadline: Monday, April 27, 2020 11:59pm(JST)
  
• Rental period: three months from mid-May
  
• Cost: Rental fees will be free of charge. However, students will be asked to pay the shipping costs (2000-3000 yen) for delivery and return
  
• In case of misplacement: Students will be charged an extra 10,000 yen in case the rental device is lost

*Devices will be available for rental after Golden Week (on around May 10) for a period of three (3) months.

*Students will be asked to pay the following rental fee:
-Portable Wi-fi hotspot/free + shipping fee (2,000 yen or 3,000yen)

*Students eligible to rent devices will individually receive notice in late April. In case the number of applications exceeds the number of devices available, all applicants will be notified of the results of the screening.
