(Part-time/short-term students: Exchange students, non-degree students, auditing students and summer session students)
March 18, 2020
With the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) affecting people worldwide and with strict border control and travel restriction measures being taken by different countries/regions, Sophia University has decided to suspend the enrollment of new incoming part-time/short-term students for the Spring Semester 2020: exchange students, non-degree students, auditing students and summer session students.
The University has also decided to cancel Summer Session in Asian Studies scheduled in June for the Spring Semester 2020.
Over the years, Sophia have been offering various short-term programs, such as Summer Session and semester programs such as exchange programs and Non-degree programs in order to provide learning opportunities to international students with different needs.
Before coming to this decision, the University has carefully assessed different possibilities for the continuation of the programs; however, as unpredictable situation continues, as we cannot tell how long the spread will last, and whether we can continue the program as scheduled, even after start of the semester. Therefore, under the current situation, we have come to the difficult conclusion to suspend the enrollment of new incoming short-term students. We kindly ask your understanding on this matter.
As for continuing exchange students and non-degree students who are currently enrolled at Sophia, they are still welcome to continue their studies at our university if they wish to do so.
However, please note that continuing students are also required to return to Japan at least two weeks before the class start date and to be able to resume their studies in Japan from April 27. The University may also suspend their enrollment in case this condition cannot be met by the returning students.
