The Sophia University UNESCO Chair has undertaken the Japanese translation of the regional edition of UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) 2024/2025, titled East Asia: Lead for Technology, and published it in March 2026.
The GEM Report is mandated to monitor and report on matters related to education within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and is intended to support all relevant partners in fulfilling their responsibilities as part of the overall follow‑up and review of the SDGs.
This regional edition, which focuses on Japan, China, and South Korea, highlights that digital transformation is accelerating in East Asia, and reveals that school leaders play a central role in this transformation at both the municipal and school levels.
The Sophia University UNESCO Chair was established under the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme to promote research, dissemination, and international collaboration in the fields of education, human rights, and sustainable societies. Through this Chair, the University is committed to generating international knowledge that contributes to high-quality education and to developing educational models that address contemporary social challenges.
For the preparation of the Japanese edition, the translation supervision was carried out by Professor Miki Sugimura, Chairholder of the Sophia University UNESCO Chair (President of Sophia University / Professor, Department of Education, Faculty of Human Sciences). The translation was completed by Professor Naoki Umemiya, a researcher of the same Chair (Professor of Sophia Center for Global Education and Discovery). As specialists in comparative and international education, both contributed their expertise to ensure a high-quality Japanese translation that accurately reflects the intent and analytical rigor of the original UNESCO report.
