Sophia University ranked 41st globally for SDG 14 “Life below water” in the THE Impact Rankings 2023
The 2023 THE Impact Rankings is the fifth edition since it was launched in 2019 by Times Higher Education, a British magazine specializing in higher education. It ranks universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This time, it received entries from more that 1,700 schools around the world. Sophia University ranked 41st globally for SDG 14 “Life below water.”
Sophia University engages in the following activities that contribute to SDG14 “Life below water.” These activities were highly accredited, thus leading to our ranking.
- Trans-disciplinary and Trans-national Research Program for Achieving Regional Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through River Basin Environment Conservation and Management
- The Island Sustainability Unit Team at the Institute for Studies of the Global Environment played a central role in proposing policies for food supply systems to the government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands:
- Enclosing Salmon: Social-Ecological Resilience and Salmon Aquaculture in Japan
- Urban Nature, Urban Culture:Rethinking Water in Japan’s Cities
- Institute for Studies of the Global Environment’s activities showcased at Eco-Pro 2021:
- Satogawa Restoration Project
- Installing water servers on Yotsuya Campus:
Sophia University will continue to engage in contributing to achieving the SDGs from various aspects.
