Miki Sugimura, President of Sophia University
Professor Sugimura graduated from the Faculty of Letters and Education at Ochanomizu University and earned a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Tokyo. At Sophia University, she served as a lecturer and Associate Professor in the Department of Education, Faculty of Human Sciences, before being promoted full professor in the same department in 2013, where she continues to teach. After serving as Vice President for Academic Exchange from 2014 to 2017, and as Vice President for Global Academic Affairs from 2017 to 2021, she was appointed to her current position in 2025. She has also been serving as the UNESCO Chairholder at Sophia University since 2024.

Makoto Ikeda, Vice President for Academic Affairs
Professor Ikeda graduated from the School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University, and the Department of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Sophia University. Completed his M.A. in English and American Literature at the Graduate School of Humanities, Sophia University, and the M.A. Program in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching at King’s College London, University of London. Completed the Doctoral Program in English and American Literature at the Graduate School of Humanities, Sophia University, as an ABD, and received a Ph.D. in Literature. Served as a lecturer and associate professor in the Department of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Sophia University, before becoming a professor in the same department in 2015. After serving as Director of the Office of Academic Affairs, he assumed his current role in 2025.

Nobuyuki Kanzawa, Vice President for Community Engagement
Professor Kanzawa graduated from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chiba University, and received his M.S. and Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Natural Sciences, Chiba University. Held positions as research associate at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia University, before being appointed Professor in the Department of Materials and Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia University, in 2014. After serving as Director of the Office of Student Affairs and Director of the Admissions Office, he assumed his current role in 2025.

Kyoko Yokoyama, Vice President for Student and General Affairs
Professor Yokoyama graduated from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Humanities, Sophia University. She completed the Master’s Program in Education at the Graduate School of Humanities, Sophia University, and withdrew from the Doctoral Program after fulfilling the required coursework. She served as an associate professor at Toyo Eiwa University and Sophia University before being appointed professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Human Sciences, Sophia University in 2005. Served as Director of the Counseling Center, Director of the Diversity Promotion Office, and Director of the Wellness Center before assuming her current role in 2025.

Mariko Iijima, Vice President for Global Academic Affairs
Professor Iijima graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Sophia University and earned her MPhil and DPhil in Modern History from the University of Oxford (Merton College). After returning to Japan, she taught as a lecturer at Sophia University and Tokyo Junshin Women’s University. In 2021, she was appointed as a professor in the Department of English Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies at Sophia. After serving as Director of the Research Organization from 2021-2023, she was appointed to her current position in 2025.

Masayuki Akahori, Vice President for Academic Research Affairs
Professor Akahori earned his Bachelor of Liberal Arts from the University of Tokyo and his M.Soc. from its Graduate School of Sociology. After spending three years in Egypt as a Japanese Government Scholarship student, he completed the doctoral program in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He began his academic career as a lecturer at Senshu University’s School of Law, and subsequently held positions as lecturer, associate professor, and professor in the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Sophia University. In 2014, he moved to the newly established Faculty of Global Studies, where he served as Dean from 2016 to 2020. He assumed his current position in 2025.
