Completion of Sophia-Arrupe International Residence

Opening on April 2019

On February 21, the consecration ceremony took place as the construction of Sophia Arrupe International Residence was completed. As an officiant the Chancellor of Sophia School Corporation, Fr. Tsutomu Sakuma was in charge of the ceremony and about 90 guests attended.
In recollecting the former Superior General of the Society of Jesus Pedro Arrupe whom this residence was named after, the Chancellor Sakuma addressed that Sophia-Arrupe International Residence was established for Sophia students of all nationals to share their living and to become equipped with the spirit of “for Others, with Others” by inspiring and respecting each other. He also expressed a deep gratitude for everyone who were involved in its construction as well as for the support given by members of Shinsei Kaikan. At last sanctification was given by the Chancellor Sakuma on every floor.

The Sophia-Arrupe Residence, our second international residence for students located one minute from JR Shinanomachi Station will open its door this April. Common living areas (shared by few rooms), the study, the gym, the multi-purpose space and the theater will be available as well as the roof top terrace to enhance student exchanges in this nine-story building. Also on the first floor, the prayer room will be open for residents of all religions.

With cooperation of Deloitte Tomatsu Venture Support, an original educational program mandatory for all residents is planned to be implemented from this April. Offering lectures, workshops as well as field works, this two term educational program aims to prepare students to excel in complexed diverse society of today and to foster their initiatives with clear vision as and willingness to work with others.
