Special Exhibition “Bible as it is expressed in Icon-Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ-Prayer of Hideko Maria”
March 12 -to June 20 at Yotsuya Campus

From March 12 to June 20, the special exhibition, “Bible as it is expressed in Icon-Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ-Prayer of Hideko Maria” will be held at the Yotsuya Campus.
“Icon” (in its original Greek “eikon”) means “portrait” “image” or “resemblance” permeated through Eastern Orthodox Church depicting the holy figures in the story of the Bible. The Icon was first introduced to Japan in Meiji Period by Russian missionary Nikolai Kasatkin who had built Nicholaido in Surugadai. He also sent a Japanese artist to Russia for studying of the Icon.
In 2013 as Sophia University celebrated 100 years anniversary, Hideko Maria, a renowned Icon artist of Japan donated many of her works. Started as a painter of Japanese traditional style art, her Icon works adopt unique blend of techniques earning worldwide high recognitions. As for this exhibition five of her works were selected to celebrate Easter which is on April 21 this year.
At the exhibition space on the first floor of No.6 BLDG, “Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem”, “Crucifixion” and “Resurrection of Jesus Christ” and at the Catholic Center on the first floor of No.2 BLDG “Ascension“ and “Advent of the Holy Spirit” as well as “The King and The Savior, Jesus Christ” (a permanent exhibit) are available for viewing.
