Building No.1

Classrooms / Auditorium

Constructed in 1932 and having withstood air raids, this historic building stands proudly until this day. When the university was founded, the building housed the president’s office and served as the center of university operations. It is now used as a classroom and an auditorium. In 2024, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government designated it a Selected Historic Building.

The “S-TERRASSE (S Terrace)” plaza in front of Building No.1, where many students gather, was named in a contest open to current students. It was chosen from among approximately 90 submissions. The “S” in S Terrace stands for Sophia, sustainability, and share, and the plaza thrives as a student landmark.

The university provides a variety of self-study spaces, such as computer rooms and lounges, in addition to administrative offices that support students. In addition, the basement houses a television center that is fully equipped with the same professional-grade gear that is used by broadcasters. This center allows students to create and produce their own content.

This building houses the Center for Language Education and Research, which oversees language education for the entire university, along with large lecture halls seating 800 people, research laboratories, and classrooms. The building is a landmark at Sophia University. The first-floor entrance features a space introducing and exhibiting the university’s history and initiatives.

The rooftop garden features a pergola covered in greenery, open lawn areas, and decked spaces. The garden serves as a plaza where students can take a break between classes and socialize.

The auditorium can accommodate over 800 people. It is used not only for classes but also for lectures and conferences. Counseling services available to students and their families, as well as the Faculty of Liberal Arts Writing Center, are also located here.

In addition to classrooms, the Sophia Student Integration Commons (SSIC) is a space designed for student interaction. To accommodate diversity in nationality, culture, and religion, there are prayer rooms available for students and faculty.

In addition, we are committed to being a university where students can study and conduct research with peace of mind while raising children. To that end, we have partnered with Shogakukan Shueisha Productions Co., Ltd. to establish an on-campus childcare facility. The facility is available for use during class hours and equivalent periods.

The Admissions Office welcomes walk-in visitors with inquiries about entrance exams, academic programs, and student life. Various materials and past exam questions are available to view. Please feel free to visit us.

The building is made of domestic timber and is constructed with fire-resistant materials and consists of three floors. The first floor is home to a Starbucks Coffee shop open to the public, while the second and third floors feature classrooms that can accommodate approximately 60 people. Additionally, as part of community outreach efforts, the building includes an emergency supply warehouse available for use by neighboring town associations.

Sports Facilities / Swimming Pool

The gymnasium is large enough to accommodate two volleyball courts. It also has facilities for judo, table tennis, and martial arts. The basement contains a 25-meter heated pool that is available year-round.

Health and Wellbeing Center provides health support and first aid administered by doctors and nurses. The center also features a training room available for extracurricular activities and individual use.

Central Library and Research Institutes

The Central Library’s collection includes approximately 1.1 million books, 11,000 magazine titles, and about 80 newspapers from 20 countries and regions. Notably, roughly half of the collection consists of Western-language books. Additionally, the Mejiro Seibo Campus Library specializes in nursing studies.
