○講義概要
Students will continue their study of Australian society by looking more closely at a number of key issues: multiculturalism and national identity debates; race, gender and national identity debates; the process of Reconciliation between settler and indigenous Australians; Land Rights – Mabo, Wik and beyond; the Stolen Generation; Australia in the context of its Asia Pacific setting; the Australia-Japan relationship; Republican Australia?
On occasion, guest lecturers will be invited to discuss such topics as Australian literature, film, the performing and visual arts, popular culture in Australia, Aboriginal art(s) and spirituality.
Australian Society I is not a pre-requisite for this course. This class is conducted in English; course readings, film and video material are mostly in English.
ATTENDANCE FROM THE FIRST CLASS IS REQUIRED.

3The Role and Power of the Bush Legend and its place in the image of Australia(ns). Gender, Race and Nation-Comparative Studies.
4The Social, Political and Historical implications of establishing the Bush Legend as a principal story for Australian identity.
5Multiculturalism in Australia: Evolution and Definitions; Cultural and Structural Multiculturalism.
6Unity-Diversity: From National identity to Civic identity. Core values and social cohesion.
7Multiculturalism and its Critics; indigenous Australians and multiculturalism.
8Citizenship-A sense of Belonging; building community. Comparative Studies.
9Multiculturalism and Immigration; the mainstream and the ‘other(s)’-the marginalised.
10Australia ‘with’ or ‘in’ Asia? Australia in the context of its Asia / Pacific setting.
11The Australia-Japan relationship: past, present and future.
12Republican Australia? Evolving Australian identities.
