◆オーストラリア社会1 - (前)
JACQUES Michael
○講義概要
This course does not begin from the proposition that there is one objective reality, a single Australia which we can all know and understand in the same way. Rather, Australia is presented as a complex of interpretations and meanings, as an amalgam of myths, identities and perceptions that are actively questioned and, in some cases, vigorously contested, whether it be in the arena of politics, society, culture or economics. We will examine the basic but elusive question of what we mean by the terms ‘Australia’ and ‘Australian’. Different ways of defining the Australian character or national identity and different ways of defining the nation’s history and culture will be considered. The way(s) images of the nation are made and consumed; who is included and who excluded by the familiar images of national identity will also be a major focus of our study.
This class is conducted in English; course readings, film and video material are mostly in English.
ATTENDANCE FROM THE FIRST CLASS IS REQUIRED.
