Minortiy Language Education I
|
○講義概要 |
This course concentrates on the writing of Jim Cummins, one of forerunners in the field of bilingual, minority and multicultural education. While the term bilingualism is often associated with English-Japanese bilingualism, this course focuses on the learning and maintenance of a minority language as well as English. The aim of the course is to survey the ideas proposed by Cummins. The mode of instruction will be text-oriented and discussion-based.
Some of the question to be addressed include: Is foreign language learning different from second language learning? Why bother maintaining a minority language? Do different languages represent different social status and power? How can this power be redistributed equally? What are the social, political, cognitive and linguistic factors that are conducive to multiple language learning?
Lectures will be conducted in English. Students are expected to do their presentations in English. While response papers in Japanese will be accepted, you are encouraged to write them in English.
