Policy Debate
○講義概要
This course expects attendance at the first semester or some independent experience with debating in either Japanese or English. We will cover some more complicated areas of debate, using some technical vocabulary. Most materials will be in the form of printed notes. Students who cannot arrive at Sophia before 0915 should not register for this course. This class will be conducted in English.

出席状況(40%)、授業参画(20%)、レポート(30%)、小テスト等(10%)
Punctuality and repeated attendance are valued.

○授業計画
1The first assignment will be related to stock issues. The first affirmative speech of the Imperial Tombs case presented by Sophia debaters long ago will be our model.
2Structure of a policy first affirmative will be studied.
3The stock issues of topicality, significance, and inherency will be treated.
4Students will work on topicality analysis
5Students will work on negative strategies.
6Evidence and quotations will be discussed
7The Toulmin model will be introduced
8More Toulmin
9Applications of Toulmin to previously studied arguments
10Toulmin and Imperial Tombs
11The final homework assignment will involve an essay about why Japanese citizens need policy debate.
