7-1 Data on Intra-university Research Allowance
Sophia is making several revisions on the Intra-university Research Allowance to improve the research environment at Sophia and although the constitution and budget amounts are varying at present, allowances for various researches are granted when considered necessary to promote research activities. In Academic Year 2014, the system of competitive “University-wide collaborative research funds” to encourage pursuit of external funding was revised to develop into a new fund of “Sophia University Special Grant for Academic Research”. The new grant ensures the distribution of funding to support all kinds of research activities with particular focus on innovative approach, originality, and internationality as well as inter-disciplinary research to capitalize on the broad academic scope of Sophia. A major goal of the grant is to enhance Sophia’s research capacity and its international recognition, eventually to raise the global presence of Sophia University as a research university.

7-2 Trend in acquisition of external fund
The graph shows the number of “research projects led by a head researcher belonging to Sophia University” and the trend of total amount of distribution of research allowance. Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research are competitive funds that are intended to significantly develop all creative and pioneering “scientific research” from basic to applied research in all fields, ranging from the humanities and the social sciences to the natural sciences. Up to Academic Year (AY) 2008 the number of selected projects was somewhere around 120, but since AY 2011 the number of selected projects dramatically increased due to drastic revision and higher selection rate of the Grants and also to effective policy of encouraging acquisition of external fund. A significant increase of allowance distribution is observed in AY 2012; this is due to selection of a project for “Grant-in-Aid for Specially Promoted Research” with acquisition of grant in the unit of one hundred million yen. Trend analysis of Scholarship Research Donations and Contract Research/External Collaborative Research is difficult to carry out, as they are easily affected by economic circumstances and research progress, but analysis results are gradually available now showing results of organized promotion of Industry-Government-Academic Collaboration. This was achieved by the Center for Research Promotion and Support, the responsible department for Contract Research/External Collaborative Research, which established the Industry-Government-Academic Collaboration team in AY 2012. 60
