○講義概要 |
After many twists and turns of history, Ireland which had been governed as part of the United Kingdom for 120 years finally gained its independence in 1921. At this time, six counties in the northern part of the country chose to continue in political union with Britain. Although once regarded as being on the edge of Europe, now she is booming culturally and economically as part of the European Union. However, since ancient times, many peoples (Vikings, Normans and English) have inhabited Ireland. They fought as well as traded with each other. And, since the 19th century, the Irish have for various reasons left their homeland in large numbers to live in many parts of the world. Today you will find their descendants in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. In recent times, quite a few have settled in Japan. In fact, there are many Japanese who study about Irish history, society and culture. In this course, we will study the history of Ireland, its society and culture through Irish music. This class is limited to 45 students.
