A Distortion-free Look at the Modern World
○講義概要
What is the reality of the modern world? For most people it is what they see in the mainstream mass media and hear from their politicians. Unfortunately this usually results in most people having a very flawed view of the realities of the modern world.

This course will be an academic / discussion course that looks to recitify this situation by looking at various topical events such as 9-11, the US led invasions of Afghanistan & Iraq, the structure of the UN, the UNSC's proposed reforms, modern and historical American foreign policy, modern world history in detail. By doing so people can have their eyes opened to the realities that the media and politicians don't want them to know. To help put everything in context the course will also look at political theory and systems such as Democracy, Capitalism, Socialism, as well as the various International Relations theories such as Liberalism, Realism, Marxism, World Systems Theory and so on.

To do this and cover the other topics a number of sources will be used. This will involve the watching of documentaries in class, assigned readings (from texts and websites) before and during class and as further reading. These will all be provided (documentaries) or assigned (texts and websites) by the teacher. Then these sources will be discussed and each student will take turns giving mini presentations of the materials under discussion. 出席状況(5%)、授業参画(10%)、レポート(50%)、小テスト等(20%)
Attendance of at least 80% of the classes is mandatory, less than this will result in a fail grade being given. Class attendance will account for 5% and class participation 10% pf the final grades. Class presentations will account for 15% of the final grade, although not mentioned above. As mentioned above Pop Quizes will be worth 20% (two tests at 10% each given randomly on the course) and the final written paper will be worth 50%.
