Religion in Modern Japanese Society

○講義概要 |
This course discusses the diverse ways in which religion is understood and practiced in contemporary Japanese society. Following a brief overview of religious traditions in the pre-modern period, we will focus on Japanese religion in the modern period. Topics include the invention of State Shinto and its role in nation-building, the emergence of new religious movements, the appearance of religious and quasi-religious phenomena in secular dimensions of Japanese society, and social conflict related to competing religious values and commitments in the postwar period.

○評価方法 |
Attendance is required (classes and fieldtrips) and students are expected to participate in class discussions of the assigned readings. Students will be evaluated on the basis of the following work: 1) participation in a group project and oral presentation; 2) mid-term and final examinations; and 4) a book review/reading report (7 pages).
