In the past five years the number of patent applications by persons affiliated with Sophia filed in Japan showed an increasing trend and is expected to continue to maintain a standard of over ten applications a year. Also, with the increase of patent applications and the constant trend, patent registrations will show similar increase. On the other hand, patent applications filed outside Japan (including international patent applications entering national phase under PCT and direct national filings in target country) are small in number and vary widely depending on whether or not any application is made. Therefore, although the number of such patent registrations is increasing since Academic Year 2013, it is to be expected the number will continue to sway greatly.
