LECTURE COURSE FOR CHEMISTRY AND LIFE SCIENCE STUDENTS
○講義概要
This English course is for 2nd year and higher Chemistry and Life Science majors. It consists of:
* Lectures on the basic concepts of our living world: "how living things work and why things happen the way they do".
* Reading assignments from the text book and other resources.
* Writing assignments linked to the assigned reading and other resources.
* Oral reporting and discussion in small groups and/or with the whole class.

Course Requirements
Intermediate English Level 2 or its equivalent.
Attending lectures and participating in class activities
including oral reports and discussions as well as periodic quizzes and the final exam.

Essentials of the Living World, 1st Ed. by George B. Johnson, McGraw Hill 2006
(Text Reading: Parts 1~7 - Chapters 1~27)

○授業計画
1* Introduction and orientation to course components.
* Studying life: Biology, Evolution & Ecology.
* Assignment 1: Observing & Reporting;
* Reading: Part 1- 1, 2.
2No lecture; use time for 1st assignment Step 1.
Observing Life forms in natural ecosystems.
3No lecture; use time for 1st assignment Step 2
(written report).
4No lecture; the 1st assignment (written report) is due.
Reading: Part 2: 3, 4, 5, 6.
5* Living cells, dynamic energy systems!
* Assignment 2 Step 1: studying a Journal research paper.
* Reading: Part 3-7, 8, 9
6* Continuity of Life: Cell division and basic genetics
* Assignment 2 Step 2: writing in the style of a selected Journal.
* Reading: Part 4 - 11, 12
7* Biodiversity: exploring patterns of natural selection.
* Reading: Part 4 - 13, 14, 15
8* The evolution of microbial, plant & animal life.
* Assignment 2 report is due: your Journal paper.
* Reading: Part 5 - 16
9* The nature of Ecosystems, Biomes and Bioregions.
* Assignment 3 (to be announced in class)
* Reading: Part 6 - 19, 20, 21.
10* Animal life I: movement and nutrition.
* Reading: Part 6 - 22, 23, 24.
11* Animal life II: the Immune and Nervous systems.
* Reading: Part 6 - 25; Part 7- 25, 26, 27.
12* Reproduction and growth: plant & animal life; form & function
* Assignment 3 is due.
