Literary Criticism: Part One
○講義概要
In this course we will focus on a variety of different approaches to literature and literary criticism. The emphasis will be on guiding students through the process of looking at works of literature from different points of view. This will lead us to the conclusion that texts do not have a single, unalterable meaning, but change depending on how we look at them. What matters is not so much what the text "means", in some elusive objective sense, but rather what it means *to us*.

This will involve us in examining the relationship between literature and language, and the relationship between literary criticism and stylistics, pragmatics and cognition. We will also study structural approaches, looking at such things as author intention and semiotics, before moving on to explore political ideology, psychology, feminism, post-colonialism and cultural identity in their relationship to literature.
