○科目サブタイトル
Seminar on Hemingway and Modernism
○講義概要
This seminar will examine The Sun Also Rises, a novel by Ernest Hemingway, during the first term; then during the second term, we will read a collection of very short loosely connected stories also by Ernest Hemingway called In Our Time. This course will give students an opportunity to examine in-depth an author who is perhaps the most controversial and well-known of 20th Century American authors. Ernest Hemingway is perceived by many scholars to be the most important American author of the 20th Century. With his picture being used to sell everything from brandy to travel in foreign countries, he is most certainly a cultural icon. We will study his place in the Modern tradition and explore the influence he has had on American literature.
