Western Traditions and the Modern World 1
○講義概要
This course will consider the central role of the Judeo-Christian tradition on the development of Western thought and culture through a study of classic and contemporary texts, including The Social Teachings of the Christian Churches (Troeltsch), The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (Weber), Christ and Culture (Niebuhr), and Habits of the Heart (Bellah). Our aim will be to understand the cultural and social impact of beliefs and ideas rooted in this tradition on modern Western societies.
○評価方法
Attendance is required (classes and fieldtrips) and students are expected to participate in class discussions of the assigned readings. Students will be evaluated on the basis of the following work: 1) participation in a group project and oral presentation; 2) mid-term and final examinations; and 4) a book review/reading report (7 pages).
