Policy Debate
○講義概要
This course expects attendance at the first semester or some independent experience with debating in either Japanese or English. We will cover some more complicated areas of debate, using some technical vocabulary. The first-semester textbook will be used as a reference. Most materials will be in the form of printed notes. Students who cannot arrive at Sophia before 0915 should not register for this course.

This class will be conducted in English.
○授業計画
1The first assignment will be related to stock issues.
2The second assignment will be to read and summarize a very difficult article in English about public speaking in Japan.
3The stock issues of topicality, significance, and inherency will be treated.
4Students will work on topicality analysis
5We will begin to study the Imperial Tombs case as an example of a good affirmative policy speech.
6Evidence and quotations will be discussed
7The Toulmin model will be introduced

9Applications of Toulmin to previously studied arguments

11The final homework assignment will involve an essay about why Japanese citizens need policy debate.
