○講義概要 |
The purpose of this course is to introduce various ways of translation to our students and direct their attention to the various problems which cautious translators inevitably come across. Translation should not be taken as a mere action of changing some writing word by word from one language to another, though the act of changing words occupies the large part of translation. From this "literal" translation alone, we will not be able to expect satisfactory accuracy, partly because it tends to diminish the vividness and nuances of the original language. Every language has its cultural background, under which much of its characteristic information is usually hidden. It is just like an iceberg whose submerged part reaches deep into the dark waters where culture, nationality, customs and manners, and even polite fiction swirl interchangeably. It is, therefore, this information which we should take into consideration when translating. In other words, it is not too much to say that the accuracy or correctness of translation depends upon how much information we can incorporate into our translation process.
