| ○講義概要 |
Both Hamlin Garland (1860 - 1940) and Sherwood Anderson (1876 - 1941) had very strong notions about what America should be and to what degree America was living up to these notions. We will be reading the best works of both well-known authors. I will lecture on the cultural history of the period as well as the various manifestations of American literary realism and naturalism. Grades will depend on weekly quizzes (on the readings for the week) and a short answer exam (on my lectures) which will be given at the end of each term.
Since these works are both classics, they are of course available on-line. If you wish, you may purchase the books on your own, but you don't have to. You may copy the pages that you need off the internet or if you wish to bring a floppy disk to class, I will put the books on your diskette. In one form or another, you must bring the pages that we are working on to class.
I will take role at the beginning of each class. Attendance is required. More than three unexcused absences for a single term or more than five unexcused absences for the year will result in an automatic fail.
