American Culture: Understanding the United States from pre-Civil War Puritanism to the Religiosity of George Bush
○講義概要
This is a lecture course. It will cover American Culture from the turn of the 20th Century to the present. My lectures generally take approximately one hour. Students will then work together in groups to try to fill out their notes. Grades will depend upon a ninety point short answer exam given at the end of each term plus a brief two page summary analysis of Pragmatism by William James worth ten points due at the end of the first term and of The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli worth ten points due at the end of the second term. Both are short, easy to read books approximately one hundred pages each (depending on the edition you use). They may be read in Japanese or English, but your summaries must be written in English.

I will take role at the beginning of every class. Students are required to attend. Five unexcused absences throughout the year will result in an automatic fail.
