The History of American Literature: From the Civil War to the Computer Age
○講義概要
This fall term we will look at American literature as it has progressed from the Civil War to the Computer Age. Even as it explores the concepts and ideas of the usual suspects in this American Literary landscape -- William Dean Howells, Mark Twain, Hamlin Garland, Henry James, William James, Frank Norris, Henry Adams, Theodore Dreiser, William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, Robert Frost, Sinclair Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, Don DeLillo, Neal Stephenson, and many many more -- it will remain forward looking, examining what literature reveals about the way Americans have wished to see themselves from the Civil War to the present. The lectures will focus more on the transformation of concepts and ideas rather than on specific works themselves though numerous examples from various works will be given to support my lectures.

Grades will be determined by a short answer quiz of ten questions that will be given at the end of the term.

Follow the links on my website to find the notes for each lecture.
