○講義概要

This is a course for students with a high level of fluency. Many students will have studied abroad, but students who have reached a high level while remaining in Japan are equally welcome. The purpose is to give students the opportunity to further develop all English language skills, particularly those necessary to deal with topics that interest them. The goal is to be able to act and communicate with the same skills, flexibility and overall control of the language that a native speaker might have.
(NOTE: this is a skills class, but we will only cover research paper writing skills if it is a small class. If it is a large class, we will concentrate on listening, speaking, and reading skills).
In the first semester, we will deal with one particular broad topic. This will be announced in the first day, but will very likely be concerned with current affairs. This will have a very intensive listening component, and there will a lot of material from the BBC. Students are expected to learn the vocabulary that we use, and this will be tested. In some lessons, students will discuss and debate controversial issues. In the summer vacation, students must write a paper based on the work of the semester.
In the second semester, students will give a presentation about a topic that interests them. Students are expected to participate and co-operate in all activities.

1	First semester: a new sub-topic each week, alternating between teacher-focussed listening-based classes and student-focussed discussion classes. In the second semester, there will be two or three presentations each week.
