○科目サブタイトル
The purpose of this course is to improve students’ ability to produce their best quality personal and academic writing in English.
○講義概要
To help students enjoy the writing process as well as improve their writing ability by looking at various kinds of essays. This course starts at the paragraph level and then develops to five-paragraph essays. This class is held in the computer room and students use word processors when writing.In the first semester, students write about various topics (e.g., their favorite memory or story or their opinion about a social issue). We look at various types of essays (i.e., descriptive, narrative, cause and effect and opinion) plus lIn the second semester, we look at a cognitive way of combining the four types of essays we looked at in the first semester. In this way students learn to construct a thesis statement. We also look at the comparison essay, figurative language and making speeches. The final essay is an academic research paper (i.e., quoting, paraphrasing and referencing) that extends beyond the five-paragraph essay.ook at various genres of writing.
