○科目サブタイトル
Learning English through Sociology
○講義概要
This course is taught through content-based instruction (CBI), where students simultaneously learn English and subject matter, and develop critical and study skills. Students read texts from sociology textbooks used in American universities and colleges and listen to interviews and academic lectures. While being exposed to English for Academic Purposes (EAP), students complete a variety of the tasks. All four skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are taught, with an emphasis on reading skills such as skimming, scanning, getting main ideas, making inferences, summarizing, predicting, note taking, and developing what they learned as the subject matter so that they will be able to read materials efficiently and critically. Students also will be required to spend a lot of time for group discussions and to do oral presentations.
○評価方法
Student evaluation is based on attendance and participation as well as performance on quizzes, tests and assigned tasks. Class participation is the most important, so students should try to communicate in English..
