◆JAPANESE NARRATIVE PAINTING - (後)
YONEKURA MICHIO
○講義概要
People live with myths, legends, folklores and various forms of literature. The themes of these stories are often shared among different groups of people in a society and are important subjects of cultural study. Examination of the contents of these stories helps to elucidate views on the society or the world to which people belonged. These stories often times were developed into visual art forms. The visualized text served various purposes and held different significance. Certainly, their place in society was not in the museums or art galleries as we often see them today.
Students in the course will look into the ways Japanese narrative sources were presented as visual forms. The class will also examine the purpose of artwork and how they were displayed as well as used. By putting Japanese narrative paintings in their environmental, religious and historical context, the members of the seminar should come to understand different facets of this historical art form.
The seminar focuses on the illustrated scrolls of the biography of Priest Ippen (founder of the Ji Sect of Buddhism 時宗) titled Ippen Hijiri-e 一遍聖絵 owned by Shojoko-ji 清浄光寺 and Tokyo National Museum. This set is composed of twelve scrolls and the colophon inscribed at the end of the twelfth scroll tells that the set was executed in 1299 by priest En’i 円伊.
