A comprehensive introduction to modern generative grammar. Basic goals and methods of generative grammar, with an exteded dicussion of its intellectual "roots" in other sciences. A detailed discussion of the principles-and-parameters approach. An emphasis is given to the fundamental problems of linguisc theory that have prompted its development.
