Political and Social Consciousness in the Work of Sinclair Lewis
○講義概要
This novel was written way back in 1935. Surely nothing like that could ever happen today... not in America... and certainly not here in Japan. It couldn't happen here... Who would ever believe that the United States would elect a president who would turn out to be an international bully? Who would ever believe that we would have a president who would hide behind the flag and religion while torturing prisoners and destroying the careers of those who voice disagreement with his policies? No, that could never happen. It could never really happen... or could it?

This course will begin with a few necessary short readings to get everything started. Meanwhile, students will be expected to begin reading It Can't Happen Here (1935) by Sinclair Lewis who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1930. This is a delightful novel filled with humor; nevertheless, in the midst of our laughter, Sinclair Lewis intended us to take this novel with the utmost seriousness. There will be other readings handed out throughout the year to aid our understanding of this wonderful novel and the overall theme of this course.

Bring a floppy disk and I will copy the whole 288 page novel (1.20 MB) from my computer onto your disk. If you wish to purchase the new paperback edition which is finally being republished later this year, that is your business. You may order it on your own when it comes out. Grades for this course will depend on classroom participation and a seminar paper due at the end of the s
