The Institute conducts analysis and research on a wide range of issues related to international relations, while actively collaborating with research institutions and researchers in Japan and abroad, focusing on political, economic, and security aspects. Ongoing research projects include: Japan and the Crisis of the Liberal International Order: Human Security and Peacebuilding: Japanese Diplomacy and Security in a Global Transformation Period. The Institute also holds various lectures and seminars concerning international relations.The Institute of Inclusive Community aims to achieving a society in which people coexist in harmony, beyond differences; regardless of disability or culture, and through mutual respect based on one of the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus approved by the Pope, “Walking with the poor, the people excluded from the world, and those human dignity is violated.” This goal aligns with the United Nations’ SDGs principle of “No one left behind.” The Institute collaborates with Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co., Ltd., to form a new type of industry-academia partnership, striving for social implementation based on the achievement of their joint efforts.The Island Sustainability Institute was established on July 1, 2022, to conduct research and related activities that support the sustainability of island communities by capitalizing on Sophia University's interdisciplinary expertise and working with international partners to form alliances with domestic and international island communities and overseas partner universities.The Sophia Human Resources Center for International Cooperation, established in July 2015, aims to nurture individuals who can contribute to global society, reflecting Sophia University’s educational spirit, “For Others, With Others.” Collaborating with the UN and other international organizations, the center brings together the strengths of the University's highly experienced faculty/staff members to support students who aspire to work in the field of international organizations and international cooperation.The Sophia Institute for Human Security (SIHS) was founded to promote human security through social science research. Established in 2017 as a temporary research unit with support from MEXT’s Private University Research Branding Project, SIHS has transformed into one of our research institutions with funding by the ORION Foundation in 2022. SIHS positions poverty, the environment, healthcare, immigration/refugees, and peacebuilding as the five key issues facing the international community in terms of human security. SIHS is committed to addressing human security as an international hub to formulate effective policies and systems for resolving these issues utilizing social science research methods.
