In addition, Sub-Saharan Africa has been added as a target region since FY2014, and East Asia since FY2019. The Institute's activities are aimed at conducting comprehensive research on socio-cultural phenomena in the regions of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, without being restricted by conventional disciplines or current national boundaries. Above all, it aims to contribute to the mutual understanding of the international community by building an area study that spans diverse fields and eras with a global awareness. The Institute for Studies of the Global Environment was established in 1999 as a pioneer in interdisciplinary research on global environmental issues. The Institute was reorganized out of the Earth Environment Law Research Center within the Faculty of Law established in 1994. Its members include instructors from the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (established in 2005), Law, Economics, Science and Technology among others. Moreover, through the study of Islam at the Catholic University, we will explore ways that lead to the construction of a harmonious world in which the various religions coexist. Here, Islamic area studies refer to studies that address various Islam-related phenomena that occur in various parts of the world and attempt to consider them from a broad perspective that transcends time and region, while emphasizing methods of area studies that do not neglect the individuality of each case. The European Institute began its activities in 2007 as a reorganization of the Institute for Germanic Studies, and in 2009 it merged with the Institute of Spanish Studies to expand its research topics including the society and culture of the entire European region. Currently, the institute focuses on studies of Europe from the four perspectives of politics, economics, and society; art and culture; language; and history with an aim to distinguish itself from equivalent research institutions in Japan and abroad, while promoting joint research as well as hosting public lectures and symposiums with prominent scholars of the world. The Institute of American and Canadian Studies was established in 1987 to conduct research on issues related to the history, societies, and cultures of the United States and Canada to promote research and academic exchanges around the world.
