Since its establishment in 1978, the Linguistic Institute for International Communication has expanded through research in all aspects of linguistic studies, with its aim to promote global awareness and to contribute to cross-cultural exchange between the East and the West. The Institute is dedicated to the enhancement of academic exchange and research through workshops, lectures, and hosting researchers in and outside of Japan. Affiliated institutions include the Research Center for Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and the Phonetics Laboratory. Research areas cover theoretical and empirical language studies, teaching methods, social and cultural aspects of language, cognitive-scientific and biolinguistics approaches, speech and language disorders, and phonetics. The Institute of Comparative Culture (ICC) supports interdisciplinary research in the social sciences, humanities, business and economics. Its collaborative projects and active events program enhance Sophia University’s international reputation as a center of research excellence. ICC members specialisms include anthropology, history, sociology, politics, philosophy, film, business and economics. Established to fulfill this mission, the Institute is engaged in interdisciplinary studies of Christianity. Our activities are aimed to anchor Christianity in Japanese culture and to promote mutual understanding among other religions of the East, especially those in Japan. The Ibero-American Institute was established in 1964 to conduct research on the politics, economics, sociology, history, art, and culture of the Ibero-American region (Latin America and the Caribbean), as well as to facilitate academic exchange with educational and research institutions of the region. Recognized worldwide as one of Japan's leading research institutions of the region, the Institute boasts a collection of approximately 40,000 books and 50 academic journals covering a wide range of subjects related to the region. The Institute of Global Concern (IGC) was established in April 2010 to conduct research on contemporary issues that threaten human dignity and solidarity from a global perspective, raise awareness of the students and society at large through its findings, and foster individuals dedicated to making a difference through hands-on practice and engagement. We thus hope to renew and build on the traditions of the “Sophia school” that grapples with real problems of poverty and violence —“with Others”— in difference to the often naively “objectivist” and conformist tendencies of mainstream social science today.Research Institutes Division
