12Not only degree-seeking students, but also international students from partner institutions with an exchange agreement can also study in programs taught in English as exchange students. Around 320 students come from all over the world each semester, which enhances the diversity of the Sophia student body.Exchange students are enrolled for one or two semesters and take content-based courses together with Sophia students. Other than these courses, Japanese language courses are also available at a wide range of levels allowing those who wish to learn Japanese from beginner to advanced levels. The academic calendar runs from April to the end of July for the spring semester and from mid-September to the end of January for the autumn semester. Those who ful■ll the application requirements can apply after having been nominated through the partner institutions.The programs at Sophia University bring together students from diverse nationalities and backgrounds and enable them to learn from a wide range of perspectives.Summer Sessions and January Session are o■ered for those who are interested in a short-term study at Sophia. Program participants can gain first-hand experience on many aspects of not only Japan, but also East Asian culture and society – witnessing the myriad of ways in which the cultures of the world are reflected in the maze-like urban landscape of Tokyo. The Summer Sessions welcomed over 11,000 students from around the globe since its foundation in 1961. First launched in 2013, January Session is also popular among our participants, consisting of courses which take participants to a journey through the world of Japanese language, culture, and contemporary social issues.Non-degree students can enroll in the Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA) or the Center for Language Education and Research (CLER) to take undergraduate courses and earn credits on a full-time basis.
