American Culture: Understanding the United States from pre-Civil War Puritanism to the Religiosity of George Bush
○講義概要
For many reasons I have simplified this course and returned it to its former format. This course is based upon the award winning cultural documentary The Century: America’s Time with Peter Jennings. I will lecture each video one week. My lecture generally takes approximately one hour. Students will then work together in groups to try to fill out their notes. On the alternate week, the forty-five minute video will be shown, and students will be given the remaining forty-five minutes to ask questions and work together in their groups. Grades will depend upon a one hundred point multiple-choice exam given at the end of each term for a total of two hundred points for the year. As the exams for this video series are admittedly rather difficult, students may also write a brief two page summary analysis of The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli and/or Pragmatism by William James for ten points each. Both are short, easy to read books approximately one hundred pages each.

前期学期末試験(定期試験期間中)(50%)、後期学期末試験(定期試験期間中)(50%)
I will take role at the beginning of every class. Students will be required to attend. Grades will depend upon a one hundred point multiple-choice exam given at the end of each term for a total of two hundred points for the year.
