○講義概要
This course aims to help students to

- use appropriate English, adjusting to a variety of situations
- participate in debates
- develop their knowledge of, and ability to discuss, a range of topical issues and some more abstract issues.

There will be classroom discussion (usually in small groups) and short presentations. Students will have chances to choose their own topics for discussion, and we will use a variety of material (e.g., video) as a basis for discussion. We will use the CALL facilities from time to time. Reading and some written homework (usually in the form of e-mails sent to the teacher).

Grading will be by continuous assessment. Attendance is mandatory. Students must attend at least 60% of the course and score at least 30% (out of 45%) for class participation in order to pass.

Prints will be handed out in class when necessary, and the reader will be announced during the course of the term.

The course is flexible, and the week-by-week outline below may change according to students' needs as the course progresses.

Attendance is very important; I can't teach you if you are not there! Please enter the class even if you are late. You will lose some credit, but it is better than not coming at all. You cannot pass the course if your attendance record is not satisfactory.

Students are strongly recommended to familiarise themselves with my web site.
