○講義概要 |
In this course we will examine some of the characteristic features of the encounter between the European Powers and the East Asian world from the Opium War 1839-42 to the early 20th century. After briefly discussing the old system of trade relations between China and the west (Canton trade), we will put special emphasis on the emergence of the unequal treaty system in the mid-19th century and the rise of semi-colonial spheres of interest in East Asia around 1900. The topic requires to clarify what is meant by "European powers", "unequal treaties" etc. Some of the unequal treaties will be read and analyzed in detail.
