Ethics of Giving

| ○講義概要 |
Is a gift given out of generosity or self-interest? When does charity offend? How is a gift different than a commodity? Is it guilt or love that drives a person to sacrifice herself for someone else? This seminar will explore questions concerning the ethics of giving primarily through the lens of anthropology. The readings will consist of ethnography, philosophy, Marxist theory, and psychoanalytic literature, among others.
A short presentation and a research paper are expected.

Two in-class presentation (2 X 15% = 30%)
Final paper (15-20 pages) (35%)
