Critical Analyses of NGOs in Daily Practices
○講義概要
The objective of this course is to critically analyze ambivalent roles that NGOs play in the field of international development. The course is divided into three sections. The first section addresses the context and framework in which NGOs operate. NGOs must conduct their activities through numerous reciprocal relationships with external environments. To understand NGO activities, one must also observe NGOs’ relationships to political, economic and social dynamics.
The second section discusses issues concerning the future direction of NGO activities. The world has become overly complex and fluid, and identifying the roots of problems is increasingly difficult. People no longer share a common consciousness from which to confront problems, and NGO activists have begun to doubt the relevance of their own values and goals.
The third section deals with concrete and practical problems in NGO activities. As an NGO is also an organization comprised of many members, operational and organizational problems often arise. Here questions of dependency and relationships with outside institutions are discussed.
To help our analyses, we will focus on concrete issues that NGOs have encountered when they have conducted development projects. As we study these issues we will familiarize ourselves with various development projects. We then will attempt to draw up general lessons and develop practical knowledge that can be applied directly.
