On June 7, undergraduate and graduate students from Sophia University’s Department of Education and Department of Nursing participated in a healthcare focused Collabora-tive Online International Learning (COIL) session with graduate students from the Fac-ulty of Public Health at Mahidol University in Thailand. A total of 10 Sophia students from the Seminar on International Educa-tional Development along with students from the undergraduate and graduate nursing program joined the session with 20 Mahidol University students, mostly practicing community health nurses enrolled in the university’s public health nursing master’s program.Focusing on the theme of “Health Education in Schools and Communities,” participants compared and discussed approaches and challenges across national and disciplinary boundaries. Fol-lowing a lecture by Professor Taro Komatsu on health, education, and development, students were divided into groups with both Thai and Japanese students to exchange perspectives on school-based health education. Associate Professor Arpaporn Powwat-tana of Mahidol University then presented a lecture exploring the practice and challenges of community-based health educa-tion. The session concluded with a deep discussion on responses to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and strategies for pro-moting behavioral change. On June 11, Sophia University held a symposium to commem-orate the 20th anniversary of its Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies. Established in April 2005, the grad-uate school launched its International Environmental Studies Program in 2011 and enabled students to earn degrees entirely in English.Increasingly complex environmental challenges such as global warming, waste management, and the pursuit of a circular so-ciety that minimizes chemical risks and the decline of natural capital and biodiversity cannot be addressed by any single na-tion alone. Since its founding, the Graduate School has inte-grated social and natural sciences to advance high-level research and education for the purpose of contributing to the creation of a sustainable society that protects rich and healthy ecosys-tems while achieving new forms of economic development. The symposium served as an opportunity to reflect on the school’s achievements and to look ahead to future growth. More than 150 participants attended the symposium.27Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)with Mahidol University, ThailandGraduate School of Global Environmental Studies20th Anniversary Symposium
