Among the universities affiliated with Creighton, Sophia University stood out to me because of its similarity to my university – both have compact campuses and are lo-cated in city centers. This familiarity has provided me a comforting sense of home while away from home. At Sophia University, I am currently enrolled in three classes: Microeconomics, Anthropology, and Film & Media, all of which fullfill requirements for my degree. My economics class is especially interesting. It is intriguing to learn how money flows, particularly given the current political climate in the United States. The professor up-loads class materials online, making it easy to follow the lectures and catch up on any content I may have missed.I enjoy living in Japan. Since my grandmother has Japanese heritage, I grew up learn-ing Japanese. I live in an international student dormitory in Setagaya, and commute to campus using public transportation, which is efficient and convenient. After classes, I explore different neighborhoods, trying out new restaurants and walking around. I appreciate Tokyo’s accessibility and safety, which gives me the freedom to travel in-dependently and meet up with friends easily. I especially enjoy Japanese nomikai – informal social get-togethers with food and drinks, an opportunity to socialize with friends in a relaxed setting. Following graduation, I plan to attend medical school, taking a gap year beforehand. During that time, I will focus on completing prerequisites to gain more research and clinical experience. My experience at Sophia University is helping me develop the skills needed to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. There are students from many different countries here, especially in the Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA) program. Interacting with people with a variety of cultural perspectives has been valuable. Although my home university offers one of the country’s top pre-medical programs with strong support for the medical school application process, its student body lacks diversity. The medical school I hope to attend offers free healthcare services to local commu-nities, and many African American residents benefit from this program. My experi-ences at Sophia are preparing me to engage with people from different backgrounds and to serve a diverse population, which I believe is an essential skill as a future medi-cal professional. 22 SOPHIA MAGAZINE Vol. 20Home InstitutionOriginally from San Jose, California, currently a sophomore majoring in biology with an economics minor and on the pre-medical track at Creighton University.
