7ApproachLeveraging Partnerships to Accelerate a Broad Range of ProgramsUN Secretary-General Guterres’ Visit in 2017IAU International conference 2024students may obtain a bachelor’s degree from Sophia and a mas-ter’s degree from GI in total of five or five and half years. In March 2024, Sophia held a pilot “Australia Summit Program” with The Australian National University (ANU). Students and faculty visited Australia to exchange views with their counter-parts. Thanks to the positive reception from ANU, the program will be officially incorporated into the curriculum in 2025. Another partnership, formed in April 2024 with the Indian In-stitute of Technology Delhi (IITD), is also promising. IITD is renowned for leading contributions to personnel development in the global IT industry. To commemorate the agreement, an “In-dia Week” was held in July with researchers from both universi-ties attending workshops and symposiums.Launched in 2020, the Sophia Program for Sustainable Futures (SPSF) allows international and Japanese students to study to-gether through an English-language curriculum. The program’s goal is to integrate 6 widely different fields, including education, business, and journalism, into a single platform that allows stu-dents to develop expertise in one field while at the same time ac-quiring understanding of all 6 fields.“The prospect of a ‘sustainable future’ is intricately intertwined olic universities.Collaboration with international organizations is important in addressing global issues. Sophia is a leader among Japanese uni-versities in its close ties and collaboration with the United Na-tions, as reflected in Secretary-General Guterres’ visit to Sophia in 2018 during his trip to Japan. Since 2014, Sophia has hosted its “United Nations Weeks,” a bi-annual event marking its 22nd iteration this year and attended by many high-level officials from the United Nations and affiliated organizations. Students from other universities and high schools also attend this event in large numbers, contributing to enhanced awareness of the United Na-tions and its relevance among Japanese people.Sophia also cooperates with international organizations to pro-mote student employment and to help students find positions at relevant institutions. Gaining the trust of these organizations in the quality of Sophia graduates is essential. Such trust is reflected in joint career seminars hosted at Sophia in partnership with 4 development banks: Asian Development Bank; African Develop-ment Bank; European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; and Inter-American Development Bank. Discussions are also un-derway with the United Nations Institute for Training and Re-search (UNITAR), the UN’s human resource development agency, to further expand collaborative efforts. More than any other Japa-nese university, Sophia boasts the most graduates positioned at in-ternational institutions active in international collaboration. These alumni participate at lecture events, classes, and career events, and serve as important mentors for younger students who will take on the challenges of the next generation. Sophia collaborates with partner institutions around the world in a variety of ways, including development of new educational methods and programs with perspectives that diverge from tradi-tional Japanese education. In 2018, Sophia introduced Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), a new educational method that combines on-line and in-person instruction. Organized by Sophia and sup-ported by MEXT, COIL is a collaborative project between 3 Jap-anese universities and 10 U.S. universities that aims for “human security and multicultural coexistence.” It gained significance at the time of COVID-19 and is utilized at Sophia for collabora-tive education on numerous global subjects, including interna-tional nursing and environmental studies. Sophia is also expanding its referral system to support students who wish to pursue graduate studies abroad, and has sent stu-dents to Columbia University and Georgetown University in the United States. Sophia’s efforts can also be seen in the “3+2” grad-uate program collaboration with The Graduate Institute of Inter-national and Development Studies (GI) in Switzerland, in which
