30SOPHIA MAGAZINE Vol. 19On August 23, 2024 Sophia University held Japan’s first Model African Union Conference (Model AU Confer-ence). It was co-hosted by the Japan International Co-operation Agency, the United Nations Development Programme, and Sophia University with the purpose of deepening the understanding of Africa among Japanese youth. The Model AU Conference was a thematic session of the August 24-25 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo, ahead of the TICAD 9 scheduled to be held in Japan in August 2025. The event attracted great atten-tion as the first youth initiative to proactively address sustainable development and partner-ships in African countries.“Colombia Day” was held on October 17, 2024 at Sophia’s Yotsuya Campus in cooperation with the Embassy of Colombia in Japan. This event was planned following President Yo-shiaki Terumichi’s visit to the Republic of Colombia in October 2023. Pontificia Universi-dad Javeriana, a Sophia partner university, requested assistance to convey Colombia’s appeal and increase student and faculty interest in study and research in the country. The day’s theme was “Discovering Colombia” and presentations and film screenings intro-ducing Colombia’s culture, history, and rich biodiversity were featured.
