Sophia Magazine vol.19

Since assuming office in 2017, President Terumichi has dedicated himself to advancing Sophia University’s mission and values while fostering connections with its global partners. As his eight-year tenure comes to a close, he reflects on his journey and the role Sophia Magazine has played in sharing the university’s vision with readers worldwide. With heartfelt gratitude, he extends his thanks to the magazine’s readers and contributors for their continued support and engagement.President of Sophia University3pursuit of universal human values and openness to the world.I am deeply grateful to the staff and faculty who have sup-ported my sometimes overly proactive initiatives over the past eight years. My heartfelt thanks also go to our global part-ners, whose interest in our university and support – through critiques, empathy, advice, and collaboration – have been in-valuable. Finally, to all the readers of this magazine, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation. When Sophia University celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2023, I thought about the meaning of having served as President for nearly a tenth of its history. Sophia University presidents have four-year terms and, if reappointed, can serve for an additional term up to a maximum of eight years. When I was appointed, I asked myself, “What can I possibly accom-plish in such a short period of time?”Social change takes place at an ever-accelerating rate and universities, as members of society, are naturally under pres-sure to respond. However, as custodians of education, we can-not simply upend what is in place to rebuild from scratch. We are entrusted with four important years of our students’ lives, and it is of paramount importance to ensure that the quality and consistency of their learning aligns with the educational philosophy of the university they choose to attend.Inevitably, I have handed over many initiatives, some just en-tering their planning phases and others about to commence, to my successor. Thankfully, Professor Miki Sugimura, the next president of the university, is someone with whom I have had many deep discussions about the university’s future. I can entrust the next chapter to her with complete confidence.Over the course of my term, “Sophia Magazine” has been in-strumental in achieving Sophia’s goals. My goal has been to share Sophia’s unique qualities and our ongoing initiatives with our overseas partners. At the same time, I have sought to learn from other universities. A de-cade ago, I proposed the launch of this magazine, not merely as a platform for news updates, but as a vehicle to articulate Sophia’s social and global values and philosophy that all in-form Sophia’s educational and research activities. Since its inception, I have been deeply involved in shaping the maga-zine’s content. It is truly gratifying to see that the magazine has been warmly received by overseas readers, surpassing our initial expecta-tions. It is certain to continue reflecting Sophia’s unwavering Yoshiaki TerumichiMessage from the President
