It’s very deep and I find fascinating.” Yuri hopes to return to Palau or other Pacific islands to apply what she learns from completing her studies in Japan. Her goal is to help improve education systems and to address the challenges of climate change.“In our region, climate change is a very big issue,” she explains. Rising ocean temperature is displacing fishermen from their tra-ditional fishing areas. An atoll, formed from raised coral reefs, located in the northern part of the island where her father was born, is at risk of disappearing with the rising sea levels. Similar examples exist across the Pacific islands.Yuri’s experience at the Olympics added sports education as a new dimension to her understanding of education. She realized that sports education, including coaching, raising physical aware-ness, and athlete development, is another worthwhile form of education. Yuri is now exploring the ideal of combining the teaching of coach-ing and sports with contributions to climate advocacy. “I want to bring home what I have learned, in Palau or other Pacific islands.”program is focused on sustainable development, which ties in well with my desire to study education.”SPSF is an interdisciplinary initiative that addresses sustainabil-ity and global issues across six departments – education, journal-ism, sociology, economics, management, and global studies. These departments collaborate to help students understand sutainability challenges, preparing them for a number of careers. “Education is one of the core focus areas for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It connects to everything and is essential for making improvements in every area. Being able to combine education, sustainability, and the future of Palau was the perfect fit for me.”Yuri strongly values the diversity of the SPSF program. The SPSF education department may be small, but classes include students from other departments. “Even in an education course, I can hear the perspectives of students studying journalism and economics, and can learn how their fields relate to education.” In addition to learning about educating people on sustainabil-ity and related issues, the program provides practical opportuni-ties to understand and implement effective strategies for build-ing a sustainable, SDG-conscious, society. “More than simply
