Scenes from the “Learn from Africa” program.5French Literature. President Terumichi of the Faculty of Science and Technology leads an interdisciplinary team of faculty members with different backgrounds and from different faculties and departments on a proj-ect in South Africa that explores regional development possibilities centered on railroads. The Africa Strategy Conference, launched in May 2024, is a platform for Sophia’s faculty members conducting diverse research projects in differ-ent locations to exchange information and beneficially collabo-rate in African studies.Sophia University’s “Learning from Africa” short-term social engagement program is particularly noteworthy. It has been held since 2015 a total of 13 times in four countries, including Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa and Benin. Students par-ticipate in programs at partner universities, interacting with local students and visiting international organizations, local compa-nies and engaging in civic activities during a two week stay. This program greatly impacts both the participating Sophia University students and the local students. The distinc-tion between ‘learn from’ and ‘learn about’ is important. Sophia has been holding its annual “Africa Weeks” event around the time of Africa Day (anniversary of the found-ing of the Organization of African Unity) in late May for the general public since 2017. Student volunteers are re-sponsible for part of the planning and management, and each year they present outstanding projects such as producing an original magazine or holding workshops related to coffee that are particularly attractive to high school students and young people. The Africa Weeks event has been gaining attention over the years with a variety of actors participating, including international or-ganizations that are proposing to co-host the event. This special issue of Sophia Magazine focused on Africa provides a concrete introduction to Sophia University’s growing initiatives in Africa.
